Meet the
MaHuRuCo Fold of
Highland Cows
Our Highland fold began in May 2022 with a single 12-month-old heifer called Lily Alice from just outside Glasgow. Naturally, we couldn’t have just one so the collection began to expand. Just a few years later we have around 50 in total, over a dozen breeding cows as well as two bulls Balach and Mac.
Based on a sustainable farm in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, raising a variety of pedigree breeds including Highland and Dexter cows, Boer goats, and Herdwick, Hebridean, Shropshire, and Scottish Blackface sheep as well as 4 children. Which is where our fold name comes from, the first two letters of each child’s first name - Maeve, Hugo, Ruben, and Corin.
The Highland has the grandest head with a long fringe (that appears to cover the eyes) and horns that are long and darken towards the tip, it is these features that make them most memorable.
Highlands have a double coat of hair – a downy undercoat and a long outercoat which may reach 13 inches, and which is well-oiled to shed rain and snow. With the double coat of hair and thick hide, the Highland has been adapted by nature to withstand great exposure. It is not uncommon for Highlands to shed this heavy hair coat when exposed to a hot dry climate and then grow a new one as the damp cold weather returns.
